  • Geotechnical Investigation

    Rock Leaf performed geotechnical drilling services at the Keller Regional Park located in Maplewood, MN on behalf of Ramsey County. Rock Leaf used an auto-drop hammer and split-spoon sampling for soil and geotechnical analysis at six borehole locations where artificial turf and a picnic shelter will be installed. Partnered with Kilo Engineering, a full geotechnical report was completed based on field and lab measurements, outlining geologic hazards and future construction recommendations.

  • Hazard Tree Removal Felling and Chip Trail Creation

    Hazard Tree Felling & Chip Trail Creation

    In winter 2024 Rock Leaf partnered with Great River Greening and the Comfort Lake Forest Lake Watershed District to clear 2.8 acres of invasive woody vegetation and safely remove 62 large hazard trees. Rock Leaf chipped all brush and trees to create a 1900 linear foot walking path for neary residents to enjoy.

  • Penta Wood Products: Superfund Site Remedial Action

    Rock Leaf was contracted by the Wisconsin DNR to complete the excavation and surface debris mitigation of a contaminated wetland. The remediation efforts included collecting soil and water samples to monitor the depth of contaminants, removing impacted sediment to meet USEPA cleanup criteria, and grading/covering the impacted material. Rock Leaf also sourced and seeded native plants to restore the site to a vegetative landscape. In addition to creating the design and work plan, Rock Leaf handled all the permitting and compliance with regulatory agencies.

  • Wetland Delineations

    Rock Leaf has delineated more than 35 wetlands across nearly 100 acres of Blue Earth, Dakota, Kanabec, Ramsey, and St. Louis Counties. Our natural resource team includes BWSR Wetland Professionals in Training who are experienced in utilizing plant identification, hydric soil indicators and hydrology to map wetland boundaries using GIS technology. Rock Leaf has provided Level 2 delineations and submittal to LGUs with TEP meeting representation for numerous clients since 2022.

  • Blue Line Phases I & II

    Rock Leaf was contracted by the Metropolitan Council to perform over 509 site reconnaissance visits along a newly proposed bus corridor that would avoid using freight rail rights-of-way through the cities of Brooklyn Park, Crystal , Robbinsdale, and Minneapolis. Our team used GIS technology and field support to gather data, identify areas of potential concern, and translate that information for use in the Environmental Site Assessment (ESA). In October 2023 Rock Leaf will provide drilling services to assist with the Phase II portion of the ESA.

  • State Office Building: Environmental Assessment

    Rock Leaf performed an Environmental Assessment on behalf of the MN Department of Administration for the proposed renovation and addition to the State Office Building. Rock Leaf provided environmental consulting and collaborated with other project teams to publish a document for public distribution detailing project plans and potential environmental impacts. Following the public comment period, Rock Leaf incorporated responses and submitted a second document for publication to the Environmental Quality Board indicating no need for a formal EIS.

  • Lake Water Monitoring

    Rock Leaf’s skilled Water Resource Scientist built and installed a remote monitoring device to track water temperature, conductivity and depth on Lake Orono. Rock Leaf’s scientists are skilled at uniquely designing and installing meteorological and hydrological instrumentation to monitor and assess watershed management needs, such as illicit discharge monitoring and BMP effectiveness.

  • Metro E Line Phase I

    Rock Leaf conducted a Limited Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) along a Minneapolis corridor where future Metro Transit bus stop platforms will be constructed. Rock Leaf utilized ArcGIS to create a program for gathering in-field data as well as refining historical environmental data to areas where land excavation is anticipated. A report was submitted to the Metropolitan Council and its findings will be reviewed to determine if a Phase II site assessment is necessary.

  • Emergency Response Clean-Up

    Rock Leaf provides 24/7 emergency response clean-up for hazardous material and petroleum spills across the upper midwest. Our team has responded to more than 300 emergency calls since 2020 ranging from vehicle collisions to large pipeline releases. Our team manages projects from start to finish, including remedial action. Many clients within the transportation industry rely on Rock Leaf to reduce their impact on the environment.

  • Prairie Stewardship Planning

    Rock Leaf has been contracted by the Minnesota DNR to write a prairie stewardship plan for a site in Grant County that is an enrolled Native Prairie Bank conservation easement. Our work involves identifying land uses, natural resources, and other site conditions and mapping landscape features to provide a written plan for the landowner detailing steps needed to meet the land use objective.

  • Confined Space Entry

    Rock Leaf’s highly trained and safety-minded team members have served clients in preparing their tanks for welding and inspections. Holding certifications in Entry, Supervisor, and Rescue, our team has provided services to help keep the workspace safe.

  • Hazardous Material Inspections

    In 2022 Rock Leaf surveyed a 40,000 sq ft structure slated for demolition, which revealed asbestos-containing materials, lead paint, and mold growth. Rock Leaf’s team of licensed and trained personnel have assisted with both small and large-scale assessments of hazardous materials including asbestos, lead, PCBs, mold, and other hazards.

  • Rain Garden Maintenance

    Rock Leaf is contracted to upkeep and maintain eleven rain garden sites in Ramsey & Washington counties. These land areas are designed to capture rain water runoff and help treat polluted stormwater while aiding in the recapture and reabsorption of runoff back into the soil.

    These sites are maintained by Rock Leaf through regularly scheduled site visits to treat against invasive species with the use of herbicides and mechanical removal. Rock leaf also keeps the areas free of litter and other forms of pollution.

  • Plot-Based Inventory

    Rock Leaf worked with the Minnesota DNR to conduct a plot-based inventory (PBI) of statewide forests. This involved the collection of important forest metrics, which will be coupled with remote sensing data and will aid in statewide resource management.

  • Invasive Species Control

    Rock Leaf has identified and treated a variety of invasive plants including Oriental bittersweet, Japanese barberry, garlic mustard, and buckthorn throughout Minnesota. These projects require attending to the surrounding environment for weather conditions, varied topography, and proximity of invasive species to desirable ones.

  • Forest Inventory Analysis

    Rock Leaf worked with the Minnesota DNR to contribute forest inventory data that is collected at the same sites every five years. This involved precision GPS coordination and the use of Field Maps software to accurately ID and document field data. Our natural resource technicians traversed through challenging terrain to provide this data which will be catalogued in Minnesota forestry records for research and history.

  • Stormwater Management

    Rock Leaf has SWPPP certified inspectors. With Rock Leaf’s equipment, we have installed silt fencing efficiently and effectively in a variety of terrain. Rock Leaf owns a modern and well-maintained skid steer that we use to complete projects throughout the upper midwest.

  • ISCO Pilot Study for the MPCA

    Rock Leaf’s team of scientists, operators, and managers injected an oxidation chemical into a wellhead for a study to remediate the residual light non-aqueous phase lliquid (LNAPL) and/or petroleum-contaminated groundwater. Rock Leaf’s environmental knowledge and care through the drilling and injecting process helped complete a successful project.

  • Landfill Leachate Line Redevelopment

    Landfill leachate systems can be a serious environmental concern when they are not functioning correctly. Across the state, Rock Leaf has worked with counties and their agents to remedy these systems. Chemical and mechanical cleaning, sludge removal, pump repair, meter service, and video surveillance monitoring are some of the tools Rock Leaf has used to get these projects back on track.

  • Metropolitan Council Sump & Trench Cleaning

    Rock Leaf was awarded the Metro Transit Facilities 3-year contract in 2021. The scope of work included weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly maintenance of nine garage locations in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. The Rock Leaf team performed all of the sump and trench cleaning in the shops and garages. We also filled the role of their Emergency Response provider for oil and gas leaks as well as sump backups as a part of our 24/7 on-call service. Rock Leaf is an MCUB vendor.

  • Vapor Sampling

    Rock Leaf, in conjunction with a consulting engineering firm, planned and executed a geological and site characterization of two properties measuring approximately 12 acres owned by the City of Bemidji. Rock Leaf utilized direct push technology to gather data, helping characterize the extent of the subsurface contamination. In turn this gave users an in-depth understanding of site contamination and helped build a conceptual site model for remedial actions. Once the site contamination model was built, this opened options for remediation methodology and also lended itself to lower costs and a more precise and targeted approach to the site remediation.

  • Prairie Restorations

    Rock Leaf has worked to restore two prairie sites covering approximately 38 acres near Austin, MN. This site restoration and preservation contract extends through 2025 and involves establishing the growth of native prairie species while returning each year to track its progress. Rock Leaf manages these sites by conducting regular site visits during the growing season to treat for harmful invasive species both mechanically and through the use of herbicide treatments.

  • Wetland Restoration

    Rock Leaf assisted in a voluntary wetland restoration in conjunction with the USDA and tribal communities in Yellow Medicine County. The project involved converting agricultural plots back into their natural state to provide habitat for a variety of species. This project required Rock Leaf to consider impacts on cultural resources, demonstrating intentionality in preserving archeological, historic, structural, and cultural properties when appropriate.

  • Soil Remediation

    Rock Leaf has removed contaminated soils from numerous highway fuel spills throughout the upper midwest. Site responsibilities include permitting, locating utilities, providing site safety assessments, access control, equipment operation and supervision, soil sampling, chain of custody, site restoration (backfill, erosion control, soil stabilization, and seeding), site mapping, environmental receptor risk analysis, and reporting to multiple agencies using appropriate templates and formatting.

  • Hand Tool Release

    Rock Leaf partnered with the Minnesota DNR to perform hand-tool release of woody species in timber stands. This project involved using chainsaws, brush saws, herbicide, and young tree identification in an area with steep terrain.

  • COVID Disinfecting

    Rock Leaf performed COVID disinfection cleanings for retail stores and airports throughout the upper midwest during the height of the pandemic. We are proud to have contributed to keeping our communities safe during unprecedented times.
